Saving energy around the home: A Dyno Guide

  • Use cold water instead of hot water when you can
  • Hang your clothes on a clothes line or clothes horse instead of using the dryer
  • Lower your water heater temperature to between 60°C and 65°C
  • Use the washing machine only when there’s a full load to be washed
  • Install energy efficient light bulbs and turn off lights off when not needed
  • Buy appliances with the highest energy ratings you can afford
  • Switch off all appliances at the wall
  • Close windows, doors, curtains and blinds on hot days
  • Use fans instead of air conditioners and set your air conditioner to between 22°C and 25°C
  • Reduce drafts in winter by closing windows, doors and curtains
  • Set your central heating to between 19°C and 22°C
  • Run the dishwasher only when it’s full
  • Set your fridge temperature to 4ºC – every degree below 3ºC uses up to 5 per cent more energy
  • Reduce cooking times by covering pots and pans

When building or renovating a house

  • Incorporate energy efficient designs such as minimizing the amount of down lights in each room etc
  • Insulate ceilings and walls to retain warm air in winter and cool air in summer
  • Install ceiling fans
  • Install a gas oven or cook-top if possible
  • Washing clothes in cold water instead of hot can save you around $115 per year.
  • Getting rid of a second fridge could save around $140 per year.
  • Using a clothesline instead of a dryer could cut $63 per year.
